| Although often referred to as Mother's Day, in Britain it is known as Mothering Sunday. It has been celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent since the 16th century. Originally it was a church festival when people were expected to visit the church where they were baptised - their "mother church". |
|

| It then became a custom for employers to give their servants time-off to visit their families, especially their mothers. They would take with them traditional gifts of simnel cake and posies of spring flowers, especially violets. In America Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. |
